Incredible Pilots: Sting Precision Flight Team

Flying is about more than looking good in aviator sunglasses. It's about dedication, precision, and never settling for less than excellence. Take it from the LETU Sting Precision Flight Team - they just brought home a first place trophy from the National Intercollegiate Flying Association's (NIFA) regional SAFECON competition.

The LETU campus sits squarely in the middle of NIFA region IV, which covers Louisiana, Arkansas, Mississippi, and most of Texas. Teams competed in both ground and air events, including navigation, short field approach and landing, Aircraft ID, computer accuracy and power off landing. Along with the team's many awards for individual events, team member Gregg Williams took home the top pilot award, and Whitney Brouwer earned top female contestant.

But this isn't the first time the Sting Precision Flight Team had made LETU proud, and it won't be the last. In 2010, the team took home the coveted Loening Trophy, the oldest and most prestigious of all collegiate aviation awards, as well as the American Airlines Competition Safety Award. In 2011, team coach Brad Wooden won NIFA Coach of the Year, and in 2012, the team won the Competition Safety Award at nationals.
